Could the dodo make a comeback? What does science tell us about the sex in Fifty Shades of Grey? Is giving up meat really the greenest option? Can you use tweets to spot a psychopath? Do birds make art? What do the Cold War and climate science have in common? And can a psychologist interpret your farts?

The Best Australian Science Writing 2013 brings together great writing about life and the universe, including contributions from poets and psychologists, comedians and climate commentators, neuroscientists and novelists, star-gazers and science journalists.

With a foreword by superstar comedian, musician and self-confessed science-nerd, Tim Minchin, this provocative collection is chock-full of intrigue, curiosity and controversy. Read this. Your brain will love you for it.

There are usually two American Best of Science Writing books available at the beginning of the year that has recently past. These books can normally be found in America in books stores as early as around the New Year holiday. They are in a way an attack on the religious tendencies and dominance in American culture. They can also be a cure for those Winter and Spring doldrums. This last year there was only one, The Best American Nature Writing, but also available on Amazon the last few years was The Best Australian Science Writing.

The Best Australian Science Writing of 2013 differed from it's American counterparts by not being mostly written by science journalists. One finds in it not just articles, but also book excerpts, poetry, and comedy. The book was a little less authoritative and formal than the American counterparts, even with a lighter introduction. The editors clearly know their field. One can find all manner of pieces in this anthology and fans of science writing are in for an entertaining read.

Tim Minchin writes in the Forward:

"This volume is a small, exciting, and illuminating reminder that art and science feed of each other, need each other, are each other. There is no conflict between art and science: There is only the wide-eyed pursuit of cool ideas." (p.3)

Like books in the American series, this anthology allows readers to keep up with some of the scientific developments of the last year. They also can serve as a refresher on science for the initiate, but maybe to the extent on the flip side that the avid science journalism reader or those with science degrees or work in the field may have heard a lot of science being popularized before.

Staples here include The Darwinian Argument and related stories. There are pieces about medical practices and challenging problems. There is also the fascinating perspectives and developments about the larger astronomical universe out there in the wild beyond the space debris and light pollution. There also are some interesting stories. Discussions about technological developments are also part of the coverage as to be expected.

Science as shown here is changing the world at a pace that we do not always fully appreciate. Sometimes we need to rush to keep up with this changing world that enters sometimes a science fiction future-present.

People, not only scientists, are also sometimes welcome to comment in a free society and some do so here. The editors point out: "Science is about robust and rigorous inquiry, and so is the best science writing." (p.6)

Some of the writing included does so.

The reader however will not be sure what they are getting into when they dip into the varied pieces in this collection. There is sometimes whimsy and anecdote. The readers will find this years pieces about flatulence, sex, and sex change, and other skewered subjects. There is lecture and reporting and opinion. Science writing as shown here can be a serious subject with there also being some coverage of the medical field; there are tales of incurable plagues and medical problems included.

Readers of different temperaments will find different favorites and things which resonate with them.

The collection, however, is International without a lot that defines it by it's national origin. Science is global and this collection is also with the times and communicates about science all over the world. Some of the coverage is of the Nobel Laureates and discoveries from this Australia that speak out through this collection to the Anglophone world.

If one is looking for a second best-of-science book from 2013 they can find it here. The book does not serve as a vicarious trip to Australia though. One might find such writing necessary or addictive to explain one's life or society. It can certainly be a primer for a new type of modern life. Those looking for more from their favorite American science writers will have to read more magazines and American books or wait until these Best of Science books to come out again at the end of 2014. Nice again to have a choice of more from this last year. As usually shown here, science writing can also be an inspirational international art form.
